I’m Sarah, and I’m 29 years old. I was raised on a small farm in rural Missouri, where from a young age, I learned the value of hard work, self-reliance, and caring for the land. My grandparents, who owned the farm, instilled in me a deep appreciation for the simple joys of growing your own food and living in harmony with nature. After graduating college, I pursued a career in marketing in the city. While I enjoyed my work, I always felt drawn back to the countryside and the lifestyle I grew up with. When I met Noah, we bonded over our shared desire for a more meaningful, self-sufficient existence. Together, we made the leap to start our own homesteading journey. Noah and I now live on a 5-acre property in the countryside. Through our blog, we hope to share our story and inspire others to embrace a more intentional, sustainable way of living.
My name is Noah, and I’m 32 years old. I was born in Australia to Samoan parents, but spent most of my childhood in New Zealand before moving to the United States as a young adult. Growing up, I always felt a strong connection to my Samoan heritage, but struggled with my identity as I moved between different cultures and countries. After graduating college, I worked as a software engineer in Seattle for several years. While I was successful in my career, I felt unfulfilled and longed for a deeper sense of purpose. It wasn’t until I visited my family’s ancestral homeland of Samoa that I truly discovered who I was and where I came from. The experience ignited a passion for connecting with my roots and living a more intentional, self-sufficient lifestyle.
When my husband Noah and I first decided to start homesteading a few years ago, it wasn’t an easy decision. We were comfortable in our suburban life, with stable jobs and a nice home. But something was missing. We craved a deeper connection to the land, a more self-sufficient way of living, and the chance to provide for our family in a more meaningful way.
It all started when we took a trip to visit my grandparents’ old farm. Seeing them tend their garden, gather eggs from the chickens, and make preserves from the orchard fruit stirred something within us. We were inspired by their simple, purposeful lifestyle – and it made us long for that kind of connection.
So we took the leap. We sold our house, quit our jobs, and moved our family to a 5-acre property in the countryside. It’s been a wild ride ever since!
The early days were filled with steep learning curves, long hours of hard work, and plenty of mistakes. We had to learn everything from scratch – how to grow a vegetable garden, raise chickens, preserve the harvest, and so much more. There were times when we felt completely overwhelmed and wondered if we had made the right choice.
But through it all, we discovered an incredible sense of fulfillment. There’s nothing quite like the pride we feel when we sit down to a meal made almost entirely from ingredients we grew and raised ourselves. Or the joy of watching our kids learn valuable life skills like animal husbandry and food preservation. The challenges have been worth it.
Now, a few years in, our homestead is really starting to thrive. We’ve expanded our gardens, added more livestock, and developed a repertoire of homesteading skills. But the journey is far from over. There’s always more to learn, new projects to tackle, and room for growth.
That’s why we started this blog – to share our story and hopefully inspire others who are interested in embracing a more self-reliant lifestyle. We’ll cover everything from organic gardening and natural livestock care to DIY homestead projects and preserving the harvest. Our goal is to provide practical tips and encouragement for fellow homesteaders, whether you’re just starting out or have been at it for years.
