What inspired you to start homesteading?
After years of feeling unfulfilled in our corporate jobs, we craved a more intentional, self-sufficient lifestyle. Visiting my grandparents’ farm as a child reignited Sarah’s passion for living in harmony with the land, while Noah’s Samoan heritage instilled a deep appreciation for his roots. Together, we decided to take the leap and start our own homesteading journey.
How did you get started with homesteading?
It was a steep learning curve in the beginning! We had to teach ourselves everything from gardening and animal husbandry to food preservation and DIY homestead projects. We made plenty of mistakes along the way, but the sense of accomplishment and pride we feel makes it all worthwhile. Our best advice is to start small, be patient with yourself, and embrace the journey.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced?
Adjusting to the physical demands of homesteading was certainly a challenge. The long hours of hard work, especially in the early days, were exhausting. We also had to learn how to manage our time and priorities differently. But the rewards – providing for our family, connecting with nature, and teaching our kids valuable skills – have far outweighed the difficulties.
How can I get started with homesteading?
The great thing about homesteading is that you can start small, even in an urban or suburban setting. Begin by growing a small vegetable garden, keeping a few chickens, or trying your hand at preserving the harvest. As you gain confidence and experience, you can gradually expand your homestead. The most important thing is to just get started and enjoy the process.
